Introduction

Light usage after the massive chunk last week.

1. The Real Princess Mononoke DVD?

(11 posts): A Mononoke DVD question

Is a release date a hard and fast thing? Not necessarily as Hong Pham discovered, "today (december 14) I went out to best buy and saw the DVD version. I lived in CA by the way. . . I was quiet hesitated to grab it right away for the DVD strike me odd. first of all, it indicated that the DVD has the Japanese language track by a red sticker in the front, but it is not printed in the back in the info box. . . I wasn't sure if this is the absolute perfect edition out. do you have any informations about this edition of the DVD?"

Not to worry according to many sources. Chris Meadows wrote, "The reason for its early appearance has to do with the nifty little thing called "street date." You see, stores get their shipments of new books, movies, CDs, and so on several days in advance of the street date, so they can set up the shelves and displays and such on time, get everything squared away and entered into inventory tracking, and so on. Some stores, either intentionally or accidentally, "leap" the street date and sell early."

Sharon Westfall lamented living in the boondocks, "Damn, I'm getting excited... I know Maui won't have any early stocked shelves... we might not even get any release date displays, there are no Suncoasts or Best Buys here." Michael Johnson put out the Final Word, "Go ahead and pick it up. Team Ghiblink has received reports that there are places across the country that have put the DVD on their store shelves early. It is the correct one. Yes, the only thing on the disk that indicates that the disc contains the Japanese langugage track is a red sticker on the shrinkwrap. Yes, it is the right DVD."

2. Mononoke Reviews - Wave One

(4 posts in various threads): DVD Review, Mononoke Hime Region 1 DVD Review, mononoke review in gainesville

Derek Tolley posted a link to a review of the PM DVD, the first of many to come in the following weeks.

Stephen Lau wrote up a little review, "The most exciting thing it is anamorphic. (The retail shop which I bought this disc demo it on a Sony Wega 34" 16:9 widescreen TV, it looks really GREAT!) I viewed it on my all-code DVD-ROM equipped computer system with software decoding (Power DVD 2.55), video quality still good compare with Tokuma Shoten LD release. However I found the master sound level seems a little bit low compare with other disc, I can't heard the conversation very clear. . . It is a must buy item if you are Miyazaki Fans! Enjoy it!"

Mia D'Avanza spotted a positive review in Gainesville's "Moon Magazine" ("probably the most intelligently written local paper"), "I was surprised to see this review, as they don't generally include any anime reviews in their cinema section. at least a well-written, half-page article like this will maybe open some eyes. The largest, most eye-catching type are the words "NO CARTOON" and so it seems that they are interested in challenging people's stereotypes about animation, if not anime specifically"

3. "French" Mononoke

(2 posts): On the Mononoke DVD french track

Julio Bruna wondered, "What is the french track of the Mononoke DVD. Is it "pure" french? Or is it french from Quebec?"

I replied, "As you noted, the release in North America was English-only. Since the film had a French dub in France, it's safe to say that the French track is "pure" French. I highly doubt Disney would go back to create another French track when one already existed."

Quickies

With all the hubub about the DVD, Chris Kuan discovered that "Princess Mononoke" will be showing in an Australian theater next Febuary. Martin Kaegi shared some online and offline places to buy a "Porco Rosso" French VHS. Frederic Goetzinger noted that the French DVD of "Grave of the Fireflies" was released sometime last week. Michael Johnson announced the updated Disney-Tokuma FAQ, which now includes instructions on how to show a film. Chris Wallace posted descriptions of each cel in the 2001 Studio Ghibli calendar. Want one of your own? Read this. Ogling the goodies mentioned last week but can't seem to swing that trip to Japan? Joe Monson might hook you up.

Conclusion

Nice and easy week. Bet next week won't continue the calm. Remember, Monday is the last day for PM DVD pre-orders!
