A very quite week on the list, as can be seen by the massive three threads covered this issue.
Sean Gibbons wondered, "is there a Spanish version of Kiki's Delivery Service anywhere?" I replied, "A Spanish dub exists, though the format is PAL (since it was never meant to be distributed in the US)."
Of course, a correction came soon after from Marc Hairston, "Actually, there was a second dub (using Latin American voice actors instead of European Spanish VAs) that was released by Buena Vista in Mexico on NTSC. . . I don't know of any place in the US you can get it though. For the Latin American version, they didn't have to worry about the European Spanish slang connotation of "Kiki" so in this version, she's still "Kiki" instead of "Nicky". This version is entitled "Kiki Entregas a Domicilio" (literally "Kiki Delivers to Home" or rather "Kiki's Home Delivery") and its code number is RTC V-9243 and the cover art is the same as the US BVHE release."
Team Ghiblink would be happy to hear from anyone who knows of a source.
Continuing the Spanish theme, Rigoberto Mendoza posted his quest to find "Future Boy Conan", "I saw the Conan Future Boy series about seven years ago on a Mexican cable channel (now disappeared!), it impressed me a lot and soon all my family liked it. . . in my opinion a very, very good dub. . . wondering if someone knows if CFB is available on DVD and Spanish dubbed on an online store."
Albert Sureda i Solà replied, "You probably can't find it. 'Future Boy Conan' was edited by a vey very rare company (I'll search its name, but uses to edit erotic movies, not anime). . . DVD probably will not be available, because spanish DVDs are still very rare and Conan wasn't a success. . . A little note. At this moment, Future Boy Conan is broadcasted in some regional spanish channels, in spanish and catalan dub. It's really great."
David Mankins spotted a Nausicaa reference in a comic, "Bruno has been having a bit of a hard time. A friend of hers has been taking her to movies and showing her videos" Suprisingly, it sparked some conversation.
Yakko Saotome wrote, "I don't consider myself a completely insensitive person. . . But that one scene in Nausicaa where, as a young girl, tries to hide the baby ohmu an "emotional tragedy??". . . that last panel imho smells of shallowness and superficiality, at least w/ the use of that scene in Nausicaa. Definitely, it would've been appro if the artist used a scene from Grave. . . I recognize the tragedy, but we're dealing w/ people whose civilization is threatened by a powerful and resilient species of insect, among other things."
Chris Meadows replied, "I dunno; maybe the cartoonist hasn't _seen_ Grave of the Fireflies, or maybe it would have driven the character right over the edge into deep depression. :). . . I've always felt that Nausicaa, most of all of _Miyazaki's_ movies (that I've seen) was the most touching, the most tragic in some ways. . . Now, if it had been me, I would have used the scene where Nausicaa was getting her foot burned trying to keep the baby Ohmu from going into the lake, as that one always jerks tears right out of _me_"
Daniel Huddleston spotted a "Castle of Cagliostro" review in the Nashville Scene. Bruce Jones gave a rundown of the "Princess Mononoke" situation in New Zealand. Geir Friestad announced that "My Neighbors the Yamadas" is playing at the Oslo International Film Festival. David Mankins noted that "Princess Mononoke" is returning to Boston (Dec 8-10).
