Almost another slow week - thanks to Amazon.com for spicing things up!
Cindy Massman shared her first Grave of the Fireflies experience, "it still brought tears to my eyes several times (and for a person who NEVER cries, this is quite a feat)." Her comment spawned a number of replies, Adam Newbold wrote, "I was sobbing, actually. I, too, rarely cry." Noel Vera added, "it was the early scenees of the boy and his sister brougth back to life that broke me down. Knowing that this fantasy/otherworldly moment was perhaps the only time in their short lives that they were together and happy again...like a knife in the gut."
Julien Bruna gave this story, "An evening, I was with two friends, and we have decided to watch some movies. I told them that I recorded a said-to-be-really-good animated-movie from a TV program. . . Heard the first sentence ... ... ... Gulp ... ... ... watch the movie ........... We enjoyed it. We thought it's a really sad story. But it's really good." Replies about watching the film fell by the wayside when the topic of creating a music video to the film cropped up. Jason Brinkerhoff started with, "I was going to do a music video for grave.. but at a point i just couldn't work on it anymore." What song to put the film to was the main point of discussion, tossed around were:
Alexia Walters spotted a video set to the Sting song "Fragile".
- Blood of Eden - Peter Gabriel
- People of the Sun - Rage Against the Machine
- Fire and Rain - James Taylor
- What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
- Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
- Dust in the Wind - Kansas
- Love Will Keep Us Alive - The Eagles
The list spun into a tizzy when David Mankins wrote:
It has a release date listed as June 13, 2000.
It is listed as currently shipping within 2-3 days.
"The _Princess Mononoke_ DVD is currently the ranked 10th in DVD sales at Amazon.com (it was 8th earlier today --- and was at 107 on Monday).
Much speculation occured, but to get the straight story Chris Meadows called Amazon and reported, "I've just gotten off the phone with an Amazon rep, and she confirms that it is an error" The thread should have died with that message, but the "Why is Disney taking so long" subject reared its ugly head and took repeated whacks before finally falling.
Nate Bundy asked a few questions about the 6(!) hour documentary, "Has anyone seen it that understands Japanese and is it good? Is it going to be available in the US?" Tom Wilkes replied, "For a _Mononoke_ fan, the "Making of MH" documentary is worth watching even if you don't understand a word of Japanese. If you've seen the movie and read the _Mononoke_ FAQ and other background materials available on Nausicaa.net, you'll be able to follow what's going on in most of the documentary. . . Subtitled/narrated in English? Highly doubtful. If we're lucky, there may be a few excerpts as a special feature on the video release."
Chi Chung Tse added some more details, "You got to see how Studio Ghibli looks like and how the artist work. . . The best parts to me: During one of the Studio Ghibli party - Miyazaki Sensei was cooking Japanese needle (Ed: I think he means "noodles") for everyone, he looked really down to earth and approachable, and had a great sense of humor too ;). . . I know only a little bit of Japanese but still have a great time of just watching it. A must for any serious Ghibli fan." If your interest is piqued, ask the stores on the Shopping Guide if they carry the tapes.
William Harris wondered, "considering the amount of effort Disney/Miramax put into dubbing and rescoring the film, isn't it odd that we have heard almost no real news about it since it's big premiere back in Feb." I for one though the film was shown in final form at its premiere, but apparently not, Ryoko Toyama explained, "When I went to Ghibli on June 5th, they said that Disney was still working on the dub. I don't know if that means that they are still making some changes on the dub, or they are just making the song (which was still in Japanese when it was shown at the NY Children's film festival.)" Justin Sevakis concurred, "There were a couple problems with the dub at the NYCFF, including characters speaking clearly with their mouths full, etc."
Joe Monson spotted the opening of the Lupin Encyclopedia. A Lupin Playstation game along the lines of Bust A Move is being released June 22. Castle of Cagliostro will play in Berkeley, CA June 29 - Gilles Poitras likes the theatre's coffee. The Studio Ghibli panel at AX2000 has been cancelled. Princess Mononoke (dub) will be shown twice during AX.
