Already late, so on we go.
Joe Curzon wrote about his adventures during the Japan Festival in London, "Today in London was good, it was the day of the Japan Festival Matsuri in Hyde Park. They focused on all aspects of Japanese culture. A few people did turn up wearing totoro T-shirts too ^_^. . . Searching through the pile I found a cell that looked like it was from a Studio Ghibli film. I bought it on impulse really, because I liked it I doubt it is a fake cell, but I am uncertain if it is a Studio Ghibli cell."
Ryoko Toyama replied, "I believe that this is a cel from "Wakakusa Monogatari: Nan to Joe Sensei," one of the World Masterpiece Theater series by Nippon Animation.
The character design was done by Yoshiharu Sato, the supervising animator of "Totoro." That's why it has the Ghibli look.
Robin Casady passed along a previous thread, "Looks like its from "Nan and Joe" which is not Miyazaki, but the Check the following messages in the Nausicaa archives"
Scott Ryan confirmed Ryoko's suspicions, "Sure enough. Good call Ryoko.

David Mankins spotted a new "Sen" trailer, "http://www.animedaisuki.com/latest_anime/oa-movie2001-07.htm Has two trailers for _Sen to Chihiro_. Preview 1 is the one we're familiar with. Preview 2 is a new one, which doesn't seem to match any of the descriptions I've seen of the 'second trailer'."
Tom Wilkes replied, This appears to be similar to the trailer that Mike Arnold saw in a theater during Golden Week. For example, Chihiro asks the old hag (Yubaaba), "May I please work here?" and Yubaaba answers, "From now on your name will be Sen.""
Pure insanity! Mike Arnold asked Andrew Osmond to post his thoughts on "what would happen to Ghibli with Disney-style priorities". As Andrew wrote in the introduction to his 196-line post, "Well, you asked for it... :)"
It's an involving thread requiring an extended amount of time per message, enter at your own risk! A smaller offshoot thread (Subject: Re: US animation and Ghibli (long)) with only three posts is a recommended read. It covers a ton of ground without straying into esoteric territory.
Marc Gregory posted a link to an article by Sato Kenji (who crops up a lot in the previous thread). Andrew replied with some commentary.
Ryoko Toyama noted a internet-based anime school run by the studio behind "Castle of Cagliostro". Joe Curzon saw more Miyazaki fun from the Food Court. Thanks to the hard work of Joe Monson, Nausicaa.net has a shiny new Video section.
I believe this is the smallest issue ever. Alas, no big celebration for the big five-oh.
