Introduction

Not many threads this week, but lots of one-off posts.

1. "Sen" in Berlin

(9 posts): "Sen" in Berlin and I am the new one

As you might have deduced from the subject, Knut Brockmann wrote about himself and the appearance of "Sen" in Berlin, "My name is Knut Brockmann and I am a German student of film theory at the university of Marburg. Because I concentrate on animation and on Japanese cinema as a whole I was soon introduced to the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Somhow they managed it that I love every film they have made. . . Tonight there was the official list for the contest-program on the "Berlinale", the biggest international film festival (is this an English term?) in Germany. One of the films was "sen to chihiro no kamikakushi"! This is some big event in Germany and I can't remember that an animated film was ever on the contest. . . I don't think the film will win anything, but even to be there is really good to show the critics and the film fans how good a film by Hayao Miyazaki can be!. . . To give those of you who don't know the Berlinale some hint: It is one of the big three film festivals in Europe right behind Cannes and Venice!"

I wondered if the film had been given a German title, to which Knut replied, "I don't think so, because in the news they had the Japanese title. After "Mononoke Hime" they won't give "Sen" a chance. . . So seeing it on the festival will be the only chance. Of course I could be wrong, but I know our domestic box-office all too well..."

Ryoko Toyama commented, "According to Sports Houshi (Japanese newspaper), it is indeed the first time for an animated film to be in the competition.

The article says that "Sen" goes to Berline because the festival officials wanted the film to be in the festival. Miyazaki-San will not be able to attend the festival due to his work, but he said that he wanted to go very much."

2. Thread description

(3 posts): "kiki" dvd request on disney.com

Wayne Unten noted, "When you type "Kiki's Delivery Service" on Disney.com search program, the first link it gives you is "Kiki's Delivery Service (DVD)"

http://psc.disney.go.com/disneyvideos/moviefinder/products/1509103.html

Now we all know that isn't true as of yet, but on that webpage there is a link to a request form (in the left column, under the box art picture) if you would like to see this movie released on DVD."

Michael Johnson added, "Wayne, thanks for posting that. . . Sadly, it's been a while (April 2001) since I've heard anything from Buena Vista about anything resembling a release schedule."

What are you waiting for? Follow Sharon Westfall's lead and get typing!

3. Taiwanese DVD Release Dates

(2 posts): Taiwanese DVD Schedule

I stumbled across the Taiwanese DVD release schedule (from the BVHE Taiwan site):

Steve Underwood added, "The disks will be in Japanese, plus an all new Mandarin dub. They will also have Chinese subtitles."

The Taiwanese DVDs are typically a few months behind the Japanese release date. Thus figuring out the Japanese schedule (still on a disc-by-disc basis) is now a little easier.

Quickies

Quickies amok this week. Steven Feldman spotted a NPR report on "Metropolis" (which I just saw, and is currently confusing my mind). I ran across some French Mononoke DVD info and a strange German comparison of WotW. Andrew Osmond reported a Ghibli Museum ticket scalper. More interesting behavior from Kiki Satsuki, someone get the cluestick. "Heidi" fans in Germany? Taro Rehrl says yes. Jonah Moulin spotted the Ghibli Museum short films at the NYCIFF. Kevin Wagner found a Pom Poko arcade game. Martin Kaegi discovered that the "Le voyage de Chihiro" is delayed till April.

Conclusion

"Metropolis" is a better movie than "X". If it's playing in your area, give it a shot (If it's "X", between the eyes is a good idea).
