What's a throbbing pain on the top of your hand called? I don't know, but I pretty sure it wants me to cut the intro short, on we go. . .
It had been taken as a fact that June Foray (of Rocky & Bullwinkle fame, she did Rocky) did the voice of Nausicaa (err.. Xandra) in the hacked dub "Warriors of the Wind". Emru Townsend finally nailed the truth, "after getting a tape to her (with the help of Clyde Adams) in May, she finally found the time to watch it and left a message on my machine today. It's not her."
Karsten Schubert shared some thoughts, "this dub was really quite good. The casting for most roles was perfect and the translation was beyond any doubts (one of the best translations I have ever heard). . . the open air cinema was really full on both occasions and the reception by the public was quite good." Akira (not related to the film, I think) asked, Were famous actors cast for the roles, as was the case in the American release? Karsten replied, Define famous german actors. They used well known voice actors, some of them are actors, too. Due to the fact that every bigger film is released in germany as a dub, we have a very active dubbing industry. In fact a lot of actors are better known for their voices, than for their own roles.
This was one of those threads that just ends up spilling everywhere. William Harris started things quietly enough with, "I was wondering if any of you know if Disney plans to release the music short in a sub or dub format? . . I'd expect them to pair it with "Whisper of the Heart." If I am not mistaken, these two were paired in Whisper's Japanese theatrical release" The first few responses were fairly normal, then Bruce Jones wrote, "'on your mark' is not part of the deal, so there are no plans that I know of it for it to be subbed. William replied, "Correct me if I am mistaken, but isn't "Whisper of the Heart" included in the Tokuma/Disney deal? If so, why would OYM not be included? The two were shown together and both are Ghibli productions." Corrected he would be ^_^.
Marc Hairston wrote, "Ghibli and Miyazaki were hired by Chang and Aska to make the short, so they (or rather their record company) generally would own the distribution rights. . . just because it was shown with Whisper in the theater doesn't mean that a) Ghilbi/Tokuma owns the distribution rights or b) that there is any reason that they *should* be seen together." Ryoko Toyama also chimed in with, "Being shown together at theater doesn't mean that two films are owned by the same company. For example, "Totoro" and "Grave of Fireflies" were shown together at theaters and they are both Ghibli production. But while "Totoro" is owned by Tokuma, "Grave" is owned by Shinchosha. . . OYM is owned by Real Cast Inc., which is a company of Chage & Aska" William then posted, "Well I suppose one can't be right all the time ^_^. . . Anyway, sorry for sturring up the hornet's nest again. (I seem to have a bad habit of doing that ^_^ )" The thread (subject intact!) moved on to how "Whisper of the Heart" translates into Chinese before dying.
Chris Meadows posted a news item from Animenation that was in turn taken from Video Store Magazine (got that?). I'm not going to post the entire blurb, click this link to read it, but many people responded. Robin Casady wrote "Congratulations everyone. Anime fans are not as powerless as some thought." Tom Tanida chipped in, "If it does indeed make it around later November/early December, that's a mere 3 month delay to get a version of the DVD that will hopefully make both home consumers and fans happy. Now that wasn't so hard was it? :-)."
David Athay added, "Maybe we really got through. What cheers me even more though is that the letter writing\petition signing seems to have made a dent in the Disney executives way of thinking and now they seem to slowly be realizing that fans actually like the original track." Tom also waxed some philosophy, "What worries me is that Ghibli/Tokuma selected Disney as the distributor for their films when Disney had little/no knowledge of anime to begin with. But upon further reflection, perhaps Ghibli/Tokuma is wiser than us all... they effectively got what Disney brings to the table (namely wider distribution- hey, even my mom & sister & brother-in-law in San Luis Obispo, CA went to see Mononoke on their own- and I said nothing to them about the film beforehand) and in the end the fans will also get what they want (after petitioning ;-) )."
